Description
At Decker Library we are celebrating July asĀ International Zine Month. In the exhibition case are a range of zines, many from or about Baltimore.
What are zines? Zines are usually self-published, DIY, non-profit, limited edition, folded or stapled, & photocopied (or off set, or letterpress, etc.) and produced by persons of marginalized groups or created to highlight certain social issues. There are many other categories, including photo-zines, cooking zines, library zines, queer zines, per-zines, art zines and more!
Zines are an important and vital counter point to mass mainstream media and often offer a subcultural, political, and activist point of view. Many zines are created as self-expression in art, photography, and poetry.
Decker Library's zine collection foucses on art zines & zines created by MICA students. The library plans to continue collecting zines from the MICA community, & to increase the number of works addressing social justice issues.
Zines from our collection(to the right of the Circulation Desk) are available for use in the library whenever it is open. We're hoping these pieces of expression will be used in new & stimulating ways in the classroom, studio & community. We also hope any zinesters in the MICA community will want their zine to be part of this exciting collection. Ask us about donating or acquriring your zines! For details, contact Kelly Swickard, zine librarian, at kswickard@mica.edu.
