Description
For Women's History Month, we have selected items from the Book Arts and Zine Collection that explore to gender, feminism, advocate for women's rights and equality, and highlight other themes specific to women's lives. All books and zines included in the exhibition are made by female identifying artists.
Presenting through a feminist lens, many of these artists explore and criticize traditional gender roles and constructed femininity, while others describe the often-ignored female experience. These works can be quite collaborative in nature, asking the viewer to actively question the social norms and expectations put onto women. Jenny Holzer's Truisms and Essays book cover is a statement in and of itself, boldly plastered with the quote "Abuse of Power Comes as No Surprise" against a bright red background.
Clarissa T. Sligh's incredible books on gender, race, and identity are a perfect example of intersectional feminism, which is the understanding of how womens many overlapping identities: race, class, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, affect the way women experience oppression and discrimination.
We are always looking to expand our collection. If you have recommendations of artist books and zines by cis and trans women, please let us know by emailing refer@mica.edu.
